As a youth, he studied under Lewis Hine at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, going on to draw acclaim from such illustrious sources as Alfred Stieglitz. After World War II, Strand traveled around the world—from New England to Ghana, France to the Outer Hebrides—to photograph, and in the process created a dynamic and significant body of work.
What is the subject matter?
The subject matter of this image is American realism as well as abstraction, toward urban subjects and the machine aesthetic. The picture shows Wall Street.

How is the image composed?
On the one hand, Strand offers the spectator an objective, 'straight', record of a street scene showing walking pedestrians as the sun elongates their shadows; on the other, we have a high contrast interplay of light and dark as the shadows formed by the niches of the large Morgan Trust Bank building produce a slanting geometric pattern.

What viewpoint/angle was the image taken?
This image is taken straight on and the viewpoint is behind the person being photographed. It looks horizontal.

Describe the light in each image?
The light is on the bottom of the picture. Paul uses abstraction. We have a high contrast interplay of light and dark as the shadows formed by the niches of the large Morgan Trust Bank building produce a slanting geometric pattern.
Comment on depth of field/motion  in the image,as you see it?
The model in this image is in close proximity to the photographer while the background is much more blurred and looks rather vast and appears to be outside.

What strategy did they use? (How did the photographers take the image….)
The photographer is utilizing abstract photography as well as human figure photography to capture this image. The photographer used a camera and dark-room manipulation.

How does the image make you feel?
This image helps me to understand how the American life used to be. I can feel how realism comes into play in this picture. It is the typical life of those back in the 1800s.

This image is the front of a store, taken straight on, slightly to the right. It appears to be taken by someone on the street outside of the laundromat.

Describe the light in each image?
The lighting in this image is soft due to the time of day. The brightest parts of the image are the windows of the laundromat, being lit artificially, and the right side of the building, lit warmly by the setting sun.

Comment on depth of field/motion  in the image,as you see it?
The geography shown behind the laundromat emphasizes the depth of field and shows vastness of the landscape around the community and the sky above.

The strategy used to capture this image is architectural photography and uses the color palette and lighting of the setting sun to emphasize the color palette and lighting of the store front.

Comment on depth of field/motion  in the image,as you see it?
The subject of this image is kind of far from the photographer and the center of the image is the most in focus while the edges are darker and more out of focus.

What strategy did they use? (How did the photographers take the image….)
The photographer uses human form photography and abstract photography to create a wide field of artificial flowers around the sole model. The color palette of the floral patterns work well with the skin tone of the model and both have a very natural look to them.

How does the image make you feel?
This image creates a feeling of femininity and vastness. The floral patterns make the viewer feel a feeling of chaos and business, surrounding the single, small human form.
